Spirit of Hong Kong Awards Winner – Mdm So Kam, Resident of TWGHs Lo Man Huen Home for the Elderly
Mdm SO Kam, the resident of TWGHs Lo Man Huen Home for the Elderly won the ‘Compassion Ambassador Award- Spirit of Hong Kong Award’ organized by the South China Morning Post. The Award Ceremony, held at the Conrad Hotel at Admiralty on 30 September 2016 was officiated by Chief Executive Mr. LEUNG Chun-ying. The Spirit of Hong Kong Awards celebrate and propagate the extraordinary feats by ordinary citizens and wish to cultivate a society full of positivity, tenacity and dedication.
Mdm SO Kam aged 92 is the oldest one among the seven Awardees. She is a devoted volunteer for decades. She had been reaching out to the elders who were living alone in the Mei Lam Estate since she was admitted to the TWGHs Lo Man Huen Home for the Elderly in 1993. Although she was at advanced age, she was committed to visit the frail residents who were hospitalized as well as to escort the residents lacking family support in shopping for daily necessities, attending medical treatment or even receiving chemotherapy. Mdm SO Kam has been awarded with the ‘Long Service Medals (over 20 years)’ of the Volunteer Movement by the Social Welfare Department in 2014. In 2016, she was even presented with the ‘Honorary Lifetime Achievement Volunteer Award’ by The Outstanding Givers. The dedication, perseverance and optimism of Mdm So Kam brings out the best in human nature, and embodies the Spirit of Hong Kong!
